Group 8 - Music and Memory

03/8/16
Today our group decided we will be doing an experiment with music and memory and how they are linked.

03/9/16
Today we found experiments that are similar to ours and compared and contrasted them.

3/10/16
Our group is working on forming a list of words for the subject to memorize while listening to 2 separate songs, we are also working on deciding which 2 songs to use, we think it is necessary to choose strategically the songs we use so there is a clear difference in the results.

3/15/16
Our group is working on finalizing logistics of our booth we have made a google form to take our data the day of the fair to save some paper(: We also deciding what words will be on our list and still figuring out what songs to use.

3/16/16
were basically done with everything now were just working on putting together the booth

3/18/16
Today we brought the poster and were going to plan out what were putting on it then start it on monday

3/23/16
Today is the experimental psych fair, we will be running our experiments on parents and if things need tweaking before the actual fair tomorrow we will be making those tonight.

3/28/16
The fair went well, we didnt get through as many people as we thought we would.  People were serious about it when they took it though which really helped our results to be more accurate.

    1. No, it is to memorize a specific list of words to a specific genre.

  3. So depending on which song you're listening to you should be able to remember the words given that you memorized while listening to that particular song? It's an interesting idea, not sure how it might work but good luck!

    1. We are trying to see if a specific genre works better than others. We are testing out three.

  6. I think this will have interesting results because some do say that artists like Mozart effect how well your brain functions and remembers.

  7. Are the songs being used as distractions or are they supposed to aid the participant in remembering the list of words?

    1. They are supposed to aid in the performance of the participant.

  8. What two types of music will you use? The results of this experiment could help to support the use of music while studying which makes it very applicable to high school students.

  9. I usually study while listening to music and it helps me memorize what I need to memorize better. I'm curious to see if it does the same for others, good luck!

  10. For me personally, I already know that when it comes to memorizing things, listening to songs that have lyrics in them takes away part of my focus from trying to memorize things while instrumental music has no effect; however, having no music at all is the best way for me to properly concentrate. There are many factors going into the experiment, and I feel as though the results are going to vary extremely based on which factors you decide to act upon.

  11. I like the idea of this because many people think of songs and can make memories from certain songs to past events in their lives.

  12. So which songs do you intend on using?

    1. Gravity by John Mayer, Work by Rihanna and Drake, and Clair De Lune by Claude Debussy

  13. Is the purpose of this experiment to memorize the lyrics? I would not do a good job at that

    1. It's a study to see if music affects memorization in relevance to something short term.

  17. I've seen many experiments conducted like this and often times music that is more calm helps people remember things better. It is also said that listening to a song while learning something can help recall the information later on when that same song is played.

  18. I'm interested into what your participants will say to you. I'm also curious as to what type of music you'll use.

  19. I think that the link is more focused on if the listener likes the specific genre of music that you are presenting to them

  20. Will this experiment show how songs can help people recall memories or evoke emotions?

    1. That is not the purpose but if it does it was not our intention.

  21. It's likely that music will help- just think of all the songs made for memorizing academic concepts.

  22. Is this experiment really reliable if you have to choose the songs "strategically"???? Hmmmm

    1. Yeah, that would be the definition of "strategic". It connotes reliability.
