Group 4 - Ice Cream Social

3/8/16
Today we picked our experiment. We decided to do an experiment involving taste perception and ice cream. We are going to dye certain ice cream flavors different colors so that people who taste it are expecting it to taste like what it looks like but then it is actually a different flavor so it will throw people off.

3/9/16
Today we started working on our annotated bibliography on Student Handout number 13. We had to find experiments similar to ours and analyze them.

3/10/16
Today we worked on Student Handout 13, in which we found background studies that related to our experiment and then compared those studies to our own.

3/11/16
Today we worked on Student Handouts 14 and 15. In student Handout 14, we came up with a thesis for our experiment. Our thesis is: If we change the color of ice cream to something people aren’t used to seeing, it will change the way people perceive the flavor of that ice cream. In student handout 15, we found the independent, dependent, and constant variables. The independent variable is the color of the ice cream. The dependent variable is what flavor the people think the ice cream is. The constant variable is that we are using the same ice cream all day.

3/14/16
Today we established what our experiments procedure will be. This is our procedure:

  1. Two different flavors of ice cream will be dyed different colors.
  2. Lemon ice cream will be dyed either red or blue and vanilla will be dyed either caramel colored or pink
  3. Participants will be given a sample sized taste of each flavor
  4. Participants will be asked what flavor they think it it before
  5. Participants will taste the ice cream

3/15/16
Today we worked on student handouts 18-20. We discussed what materials are necessary for our experiment. We will need a freezer and a total of 8 buckets of ice cream

3/16/16
Today we had a meeting with our teacher to check on our progress. We were asked if there were any concerns or complications we can think of and we couldn't.

3/17/16
Today we decided how we would collect our data during the psychology fair. We are going to create a Google Form for ourselves to answer questions such as gender, age and what flavor they think it is.

3/21/16
Today we decided what info and pictures we are going to put on our poster. We have to pick out key points from our background studies to show on our poster and also present our hypothesis and how we plan to prove it.

3/22/16
Today we picked out what pictures would go on our poster and printed out and cut out all of the materials that are to go on our poster

3/23/16
Today we made all last touches on our poster for parent night. The parents will come test out our experiments tonight so we can get an idea of how our experiment will work and any changes we need to make.

3/24/16
Today is the day of the psychology fair

3/28/16
The psychology fair went very smoothly and we had more than enough ice cream. We had over 900 responses and people seemed to really enjoy our booth. From what I've seen so far of the results, it seemed that about half the people guessed right and half guessed wrong. Some of the answers were way off and some people got it right away.

  1. I love ice cream! This might become one of my new favorite experiments.

  2. Just wondering why you are categorizing what flavor people think someone it by age and gender?

  3. This is a very unique experiment! Now I wonder if age and gender has anything to do with how we perceive the taste of any foods.

  4. Anything with free food sounds great to be honest.

    1. I would have to agree with this. I love ice cream and i am wondering if the colors will mess with how I think it will taste.

  5. Will the participants be given options as to what ice cream flavor they believe it is?

  7. I think the participants will enjoy this experiment!

  8. This one sounds interesting. I wonder if students will actually think it tastes like the color it is.

  9. The best experiment I've seen so far!

  10. last year when I took psych 2 my group did a similar test but with lemonade. I think the results would be fairly similar between the two tests

  11. I am excited to see this experiment and eat the ice cream.

  12. This is a great idea, I might come just for the ice cream but I'm also interested to see how many people, including myself, will be able to identify the flavor correctly.

  13. anything with ice cream involved is going to be great

  14. Cool experiment. Free ice cream sounds fantastic. It will be interesting to see how many people actually think the flavors are lemon ice and vanilla.

  15. Definitely going to try this one out

  16. I think this is going to be a cool experiment. It will be fun to see how to taste different from what it looks like.

  17. Ice cream is a very good idea because people will be drawn to this experiment. I think it would be interesting to see the people who catch the flavors not matching the colors versus the people who believe what they see.

  18. Ice cream is good so this project is bound to be good.

  19. Food dye is a great way to confuse the people testing the experiment.

  20. ice cream i think will make your booth popular i cant wait to see if my taste buds and my brain are tricked

  21. I really like this idea because when I eat different types of candy, for some reason, the red tastes better than the blue piece, even though they really taste the same. This experiment shows how something as simple as a color can distort reality, and I predict that nearly everyone will say the ice cream will taste different from what the true taste is.

  22. This is cool, it's always interesting to mess with people and their preconceptions about how certain foods will taste.

  23. I am very excited for this experiement. I will also be stopping by for the ice cream itself

  24. This is a very interesting experiment to see which effects taste more: your brain or taste buds?

  25. Very cool experiment! I think people will be eager to participate so they can eat ice cream and there will also be very interesting results.

  26. This is really interesting as I would love to see how the brain can form assumptions towards taste just by the physical appearance.

  27. This is a really interesting idea. I wonder if people would have more trouble identifying the flavors if they were all the same color.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I really want to try the ice cream and see what effects the different colors have on my sense of taste

  29. This is a cool experiment to see how sight and taste are related. Can't wait to see it! Glad you chose ice cream as your food item!

  30. I like this blog because you actually said what you're doing and all the other ones I've read so far haven't. This seems really interesting and I'm interested to see the results for myself.

  31. This is such a cool experiment! I love ice cream so I'm excited to see how it turns out. I wonder if gender and age has an effect!

  32. This is kind of like the jelly bean game thing that Mr. Geiger talked about. Kind of terrifying but interesting to see what will happen.

  33. I love ice cream so this is a cool experiment! We also have learned about perception in class so it will be interesting.

  34. This experiment is really interesting! I never would have thought to change the color of ice cream to see if it tastes different. Good luck!

  35. This is really cool because I know I eat things sometimes on how they look and to have the ice cream different colors then their tastes will definitely confuse a lot of people.

  36. Very cool and seems fun and interesting. Will definitely try it

  37. I am definitely coming to this booth more than once. So you can get more results and feedback from participants..haha

  38. This looks so fun! I will for sure stop by to see it !

  39. I was actually a part of an experiment like this back in the 4th grade. Instead of ice cream, it was different types of soft drinks. I got most of the flavors wrong based on the color so I definitely can see your experiment being a success!

  40. This seems really cool and interesting. I hope your experiment turns out well and the results are good.

  41. Most people seem to look at the color and relate it to the flavor. I'm bet it's going to be interesting to see their answers when realizing that is not the case.

    ReplyDelete
  42. This is a lot like the "What do you taste?" experiment and it's cool that sight can have an impact on what we taste.

    ReplyDelete
  43. This is an interesting experiment. I wonder how prevalent the change in perception will be.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Colors seem to be linked to taste, and I am interested in individual perception. Good luck.

    ReplyDelete
  45. Really excited to try out this experiment! it'd be cool to see if our perception changes!

  46. Taste buds experiments are very interesting. The ice cream with make it fun!

  47. Cant wait to see the results for this experiment. Ice cream will make the experiment fun

  48. Ive never heard of this experiment before. sounds interesting.

  49. This experiment was trippy! Oh my god. So, you guys dyed the ice cream, which threw me off because when you see red ice cream you would think it's cherry or watermelon; however it's peanut butter. It's weird how we might generalize or assume before we even taste the ice cream too.
