Group 1 - The Fake Hand

March 9, 2016 - Day 1

Today we picked our experiment for the Psychology Fair. Our group of three decided to do the fake hand illusion. This experiment is to learn the understanding of sight, touch and proprioception. We also started our student handout today. For this handout we have to look at other articles and see how they relate to our experiment. We need to find real articles and make sure they are credible before siting them.

March 11, 2016 - Day 3

Today we are finishing the student handouts for our experiment (The Illusion of the Fake Hand). We finished handout 11 and 12. Student handout 11 was how we are going to separate the roles of our group to specific tasks. We haven't planned every role but we filled up most of them. For student handout 12 we decided our topic. Our topic is the experiment of the fake hand. Today we are continuing on working on student handout 13 and starting handout 14. Student handout 13 is looking up articles for background research about our experiment. Not everyone has found their article yet. Student handout 14 is creating a hypothesis. We feel this handout will be a hard one to finish but hopefully we can figure it out.

March 15, 2016 - Day 5

Today we are finishing more student handouts for our experiment. We are finishing handout 16 and 17. Student handout 16 is about who we will do the experiment on and how long it will take. Student handout 17 is a Google Form asking us if we are able to pull off the experiment. After these handout's we will move onto handout 18 which is our rough draft. We are also going out to buy the supplies needed for the experiment, like the poster board. We will ask the preschool to borrow paint brushes and we will ask Mr. Vuillaume for the fake hand to borrow too.

March 17, 2016 - Day 7
Today we are finishing our student handout 18. This handout is the rough draft of our experiment explaining everything about the experiment from the background research all the way to what we will be doing during our experiment. We also have to list all the sources we used for our research at the bottom of the rough draft. We need already finished and handed in student handout 19 and 20. Tomorrow we will start student handout 21. In order to start this handout we will need to buy a poster board to decorate and work on next week.

March 18, 2016 - Day 8
Today we are starting our poster! We are typing everything we need to put on the poster. We´re also finding pictures to put on our poster. We are also taking the poster to the preschool to paint and make letters for our title.

March 23, 2016 - Day 11
Tomorrow is the Psychology Fair! Above is our poster we will be using for our experiment.

March 28, 2016
Last week was the psychology fair! Our experiment using the fake hand went well and people seemed to enjoy it! We didn't get to experiment on as many people as we hoped even though the booth was packed the entire time. People continued to come to our booth, bringing their friends with as well. Teachers also brought their students to participate too. Our experiment worked on almost everyone and after looking at our data it seemed girls were more prone for it to work. Overall the experiment and psych fair was fun and we would definitely do it again.

  1. This article might be useful to you - the researcher "Ramachandran" might be a good search term too - http://phenomena.nationalgeographic.com/2013/04/14/the-invisible-hand-illusion/

  3. Sounds interesting, in psychology we learned how we can trick the brain by doing an experiment like that showing like you would hit the fake hand but your actual hand will feel it or some sort of sensation because your brain is used to a certain thing which by that you tricked the brain!! Good luck guys!

  4. I feel like this has been seen in a lot of Psych Fairs over the years, but each group does a good job at making it their own so I can't wait to see how it turns out.

  11. I have seen this experiment before. It is awesome! I enjoy the part where you trick someone to feel the pain even though it is just a fake hand. It is so freaky. I wonder if it does work on everyone or just when people focus on the hand so much that the brain forgets it is just an illusion. I think this experiment will be a fan favorite because who doesn't love illusions...

  17. i wonder if it affects people if you tell them its the fake hand but you use a real one tricking the brain into thinking it really is the fake one touching them or if some people would actually be able to tell them apart

  19. This illusion was so creepy! Isn't it when the participant feels an imaginary hand petting their hand? I was so spooked aha I hope you get good reactions and good data!

  21. The idea behind this experiment is truly intriguing. I'm curious to see how your results work out and would be interested see the use of priming your subjects before preforming the experiment as a twist to it.

  22. I tried this experiment last year and did not feel any sensation in the fake hand. Maybe it was because the person only brushed it for a couple of seconds though.

  32. The experiment works better with people who believe to have and attachment to the fake hand. I feel this experiment is done quite often and always yields good results.

  33. I remember seeing in a similar experiment last year where a hammer slams down on table where you think your hand is. It was very scary and funny because every time the participant jumps even though they know they're not getting hurt. Interesting experiment.
