Today we started working on our Psychology Fair project. We are going to be doing the "Marshmallow Experiment," which is a study on delayed gratification. Our participants will be offered the choice of getting a marshmallow right away, or the option of waiting a few more minutes for two of the sweet treats. They will not know how long they have to wait, but we will have them wait for 4 minutes.
We have been working on dividing the labor involved in this project between the three of us, as well as researching it to gain a better understanding of the significant of the results this experiment has gotten.

Here is a link to the results of the Stanford study on delayed gratification.

Today we looked up articles to better immerse ourselves in understanding the marshmallow experiment and delayed gratification. Basically we are testing people's self control.

We are trying to find a hypothesis based on what we think will happen at the Psychology fair. We are not testing little kids, which is usually how this experiment is done. Instead we are testing highschoolers. A concern of ours is that the marshmallow will not be temptation enough for our older test subjects, but we still want to try it out.

Brainstorming ideas for poster board

We have decided that marshmallows may not be enough to tempt people. We are going to have candy too. The experiment will stay the same, except that instead of getting two marshmallows in delayed gratification, they will get the two and a piece of candy.

Today we worked on our poster board. Our hypothesis is, If given the option of delayed gratification, our participants will not wait, only take the marshmallow and leave. We think this because highschoolers are impatient and will just want to continue on with psych fair.

We continued to work on our poster board today

Finished our poster board. It is pretty colorful and we hope it will attract people to our booth.

We need a lot of marshmallows. And candy. I have some candy at home but the three of us are going to go out to get some marshmallows for Psych Fair.

We bought our marshmallows today. We were worried about not having enough but I think we are going to have a lot of extras.
Great topic! This long article from the Atlantic might be useful (interview with Mishel) http://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2014/09/what-the-marshmallow-test-really-teaches-about-self-control/380673/ AND this one about a "modern" take on the marshmallow test might be interesting to you http://hechingerreport.org/the-new-marshmallow-test-resisting-the-temptations-of-the-web/

ReplyDeleteThis was probably one of the most interesting experiments I've come across
ReplyDeleteGood topic interested to see how I respond to this experiment.
ReplyDeleteCool idea! It will be interesting to see what people do and how they react after knowing. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteThis is an interesting topic, but I believe it may only work well on children, but I could be wrong.
ReplyDeleteI really like the idea of this experiment; I can't wait to see the results at the fair tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteThis experiment is quite unique – it's rather straight-forward but the results should be very interesting!
ReplyDeleteWaiting for food will be hard but it's an interesting study. I hope to try it because I'm not sure how I'll react to it

ReplyDeleteSuper interesting -- I'm not sure which option I would choose.
ReplyDeleteThis is one where I'm curious how close the results of the study will end up being.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds really cool and I like the title. I'm excited to try it
ReplyDeleteI think the experiment will have a nice turnout because of the offering of marshmallows. Interesting experiment too and I'm excited to test it in person.
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome! Not only am I curious to see the outcome of the study I also really want some sweets right now.
ReplyDeleteClever title and Interesting experiment
ReplyDeleteThis seems like a really cool experiment, I'm excited to see it at the fair
ReplyDeleteI would like to see how the duration of time plays into this experiment. For example, ask me to wait one minute for two marshmallows and I will say yes; ask me to wait three minutes and I will say no.
ReplyDeleteGood topic. This experiment seems interesting and I am certain you will be getting a variety of results because there will be people who wait and those who take the one marshmallow. Hopefully your experiment works as you would like it to.
ReplyDeletewhy would anyone want to wait? i would eat it right away
ReplyDeleteoh wait i just saw that you get two if you wait. in that case id wait
ReplyDeleteThis sounds really cool! I'm curious to see how it turns out and whether or not people will be willing to wait.
ReplyDeleteI think it is a great idea to test the patience of others in this environment because of how much is all going on at once during the psych fair
ReplyDeleteI like the waiting component of this experiment. the incentive of double the marshmallows is intriguing
ReplyDeleteI like how you did so much research for this experiment.
ReplyDeleteAs we're now seniors in high school, I hope that most of us are able to tell that waiting the two minutes is the best option. Excited to see the results.
ReplyDeleteAnything with marshmallows is a good idea!
ReplyDeleteI'm very interested to see the results of this! I feel like the results will be pretty evenly split based on the cost-benefit analysis.
ReplyDeleteA lot of people lack patience, so this is an interesting experiment.
ReplyDeleteMost people won't be patient. I think people will be in a rush to take it all in
ReplyDeleteThis is an interesting experiment to see who will want the gratification right away or have self restraint to wait for a few more.
ReplyDeleteThis is a very original idea! Awesome!
ReplyDeleteSeems pretty cool
ReplyDeleteIt should be funny to see if people have the patience to wait for the marshmallow. Very cool idea!
ReplyDeleteThis is very unique, it will definitely test people's patience.

ReplyDeleteInteresting topic! I know I am definitely to impatient to wait for food.
ReplyDeleteI ENJOYED THIS EXPERIMENT, BUT I feel like this would be pointless with high schoolers like we know self-control and following instructions. I'm interested to see who overcomes the experiment or who will give up.
