Group 24 - So you think you can smell?

Tuesday March 8th 2016- Decided on the project to be related to people not challenging the obvious. Also we completed Division of labor sheet. For our project, we will get candles, and switch the labels and have people smell. Then we will ask the people what they think it smells like.

Wed. March 9th- Thought more about how to execute performing the experiment or even possibly changing it. Also we began Student handout 12.

Thursday March 10th- We have completed the student handout 12, will begin background research. We are still discussing how to execute the lab. We decided to get multiple candles, each in pairs of 2. then we will cover the entire thing in tin foil so they cant see what it looks like. Next we will put labels on the tin foil. 2 exact same candles will be placed on the table. One with the correct label, and one candle with its label switched. We will make them smell the first one and tell us what they think it smells like. Then we will make them smell something in between. Finally they will smell the candle that´s the same as the first and we will ask them what they think it smells like.

Friday-March 11th- We have almost completed SH 13, but we have to type 2 paragraphs to turn it in.

Monday March 14th- We have complete SH 13, 14, and 15. We are ready to turn it in. Matt will get the poster board for Thursday. Over the weekend we will all get 2 candles that are the same. To finally start gathering the items for our experiment.

Tuesday March 12th- We have completed SH 16, 17, and are beginning 18. We are planning what the poster board should be called, and look like.

Wed. March 13th- We have finished all the handouts besides 18. Matt went to Micheal's and got the poster board for tomorrow. We explained the experiment to Mr. V so our idea got approved.

Thursday March 14th- We have completed SH 18, 19 , and 20. We resubmitted 18 because we fixed the citation and want 100%. We have our poster board. So now we will begin working on the poster board and our google form.

Friday March 15th- We are deciding how to set up our poster board to make it appealing. We decided on handing out candy to make people come to our booth.

Monday March 21- We started on our poster, we are working on our title and ways to make our poster pop. So far it was a very productive day, but we may have to take the poster home to complete it because class may not be enough time for us.

Tuesday March 22- We need to continue working at home because our title took too much time to complete. We will finish tonight and set up tomorrow. Also we are very excited to see the results that we obtain Thursday.

Wednesday March 23- We set up. The parents came and tested out the experiments, which went very well. We are ready for tomorrow

Thursday March 24- The psychology fair was a success. We proved our hypothesis right. Here are some pictures from our day. About 32% of 300 people said that the candles were the same, the rest were fooled.

  1. Would love to learn more about how you will execute your experiment.

  2. I am interested to see how people react to this experiment. Even though both candles will be the same sent, I think people will change their answers based on the labels.

  3. I am interested to see what people think the candles smell like. I think people will get tricked and switch their answer based on the labels on the candles, even though they are the same sent.

  4. Why not just take the labels off instead of switching them?

  5. Giving out candy is a good incentive to getting people to really participate.

  6. I like the idea of the switching the labels because then you can fully get a sense of the test subject's willingness to automatically believe the label as well as agree to what others have said. If more people are agreeing that the candle smells like the coinciding incorrect label, then it is also more likely that continuous test subjects will gravitate towards that answer.

  7. this sounds like a really interesting idea!

  8. Will the participators be blindfolded?

  9. I like the idea of subtracting peoples preconceived notions about a certain type of candle by removing the colors/labels of the candles.

  10. interesting to see how people will get mixed up when sight and smell are conflicting

  11. You have a well thought out procedure. I hope you get the data you want

  12. I think people will end up saying a scent similar to what the label says rather than figuring out that the first and last candles are the same ones. It sounds like it'll be an interesting experiment that'll trick a lot of people

  13. I think that switching the labels is a good way to identify how people might believe what is on the label is actually what they are smelling; however, it is not.

  14. This is interesting because people tend to have preconceptions about smells if they know what the smell is going to be. I think people will most likely say that each candle smells like what the label says.

  15. I think your experiment is very interesting. I believe the majority of people will not be fooled by the wrong labels though.

  16. Very well thought out procedure, it should result in some interesting data.

  17. I think that blocking the color of the candle will really help disguise its scent since a lot of candles' colors correspond to their intended scent.

  18. I really think that a lot of people will just say the second candle smells different because they see the different label. It will be interesting to know how many people realize they are the same. I also want the candy you are giving out

  19. This seems cool! I love smelling candles. Sometimes if I'm at a store with my mom and my mom is staring at a clothes rack and I'm so bored I just go find the candle aisle and start sniffing all the candles!!! I noticed you were changing/hiding the labels of the candles, have you thought about changing the color of the actual wax? Like, sometimes I can tell what a candle is by the color of the wax. Like for example, a pomegranate colored candle might smell like pomegranates!! And a green candle might be pine or pineapple or apple or grass(??) but definitely not chocolate because chocolate is a brown candle! :)

  21. This is going to be a very cool experiment! I like the whole idea of going beyond the obviousness of smells. I look forward to checking it out. Great job and good luck!

  22. I am curious to find out what the smells are for the candles. Can't wait to see this experiment tomorrow.

  23. Seems like a lot of steps to execute this experiment but id like to see where it goes.

  24. Smell is a very powerful sense so it is interesting to see how it can be manipulated

  25. I'm curious to see if people change their answers even though the smells are going to be the same.

  26. I like the idea of switching labels to see if those tested will have a preconceived notion of what the candle "should" smell like.

  27. I am looking forward to the candy part of this experiment!

  28. Love the idea! I am very interested to see people's answers.

  30. This experiment is a great test to see how our brains distinguish our sense of smell and sight. Seeing how individuals differentiate each candle based on their label will be very interesting.

  31. This is a cool idea to predict if people are really influenced by labels. I'm interested as to see how many people have different answers for the candles.

  32. I love experiments like this because its interesting to see the results

  33. The labels may not work, but the concept is still very interesting. Good Luck!

  34. This experiment is really going to test peoples smell I like the idea

  35. I hope your experiment works and turns out well! Good luck!

  36. cool experiment, would love to see how you execute it

  37. I like how you guys are giving out candy as a reward to get people to come to your booth, smart idea.

  38. I think this is experiment can be related to many things and not just candles. Many people assume a smell just because of the label, it will be great to see the outcome!

    ReplyDelete
  39. I feel like many people will trick their brains into thinking the candles are differently scented. This experiment is very well laid out and i'm very interested in seeing the end results.

  40. I'm really curious to see how people will react to this one, definitely have to stop by!

  41. I am looking forward to see if this experiment work and will definitely be trying this out for myself. I am curious to see if people will actually believe the wrong label on the candle. Good Luck!
