Group 28 - Boys or Girls? Battle of the Nose

03/08/16:
Our group consists of Shireen, Hadeel, Shorouq, and I.
Today, in class we looked at Psych Fair projects from the previous years, to get a better understanding of what we want to do. Mr. Vuillaume went over all the handouts, so we can have prior knowledge of what we have to do. He showed us how to write our essays in APA style. So now it was time for us to decide on an experiment to conduct. There were some that interested us, but they were all taken by the time we chose them. Being that we are all in different periods, Shireen and I in one, Hadeel in one, and Shorouq in another; we all had to agree on one experiment. The period was over, and we still haven't chose an experiment.

03/09/16:
The night before Shireen made a group chat, Hadeel named it Psych Fair Clan, so we can better communicate. Shorouq found an experiment that we all agreed on, Do Women Have a Better Sense of Smell? We presented the experiment to Mr.Vuillaume, and he gave us the okay to do it. Being that we are all girls, we found this experiment to be interesting to conduct. During lunch we all talked about the experiment, and how we would go about doing the experiment. We also started working on Handouts 11 and 12.

03/10/16:
By today we finished working on Handouts 11 and 12. We started working on Handouts 13 through 15, which is due on Monday. We also started to talk more about how we wanted to go about conducting our experiment. And materials that we would need, and when would be a good time to start working on the experiment. We decided that we wanted to use spices and fruits for the things for people to smell.

03/11/16:
Today we finished Handout 15, but we are still currently working on Handout 13.  Handout 15 was very to finish, but Student Handout 13 is taking more time to do.

03/14/16:
Today, Mr. Vuillaume went over Student Handouts 16 and 17, which is due tomorrow. As a class we discussed ways to bring attention/people to your experiment, and the materials we will need.We also talked about how many people you would want to be in your experiment at a time. Doing it in groups vs individual both has its disadvantages and advantages. We had to figure out who we are trying to get the attention of, whether it's based on gender or age. Shorouq finished Handout 16, and I finished Handout 17. Student Handout 13 is still being worked on, but will be done before the end of the period.

03/15/16:
Today,Mr. Vuillaume went over Student Handouts 18 and 19. Last night we finished Student Handout 13, even though we were worried, we received a good grade on it. By this time, Student Handouts 18 and 19 are finished, because Shorouq and Hadeel have Psych at an earlier period than Shireen and I. As of right now we are working on Student Handout 20, which is a list that we have to fill out. We have to write the materials that will be used, amount, source, availability for that day.

03/16/16:
By today, we finished all the Student Handouts, so now all we have is the poster board. Mr.Vuillaume called each group up to ask us about how our experiment is going, and if there was anything we needed from him. We decided to meet up to start on our poster board.

03/17/16:
Today we had to bring in our poster boards, to show Mr.Vuillaume. Also Mr.Vuillaume talked about how we have to have individual discussions with. He had to know whether we had to build something, or anything
else we feel he must be notified about. We learned that the way you express yourself during the experiment must stay the same throughout the experiment, because that can actually affect the results of your experiment. He asked if anyone was doing a survey, and how to go about that on a google drive. Within the group we are still figuring out a day that would be good for us to meet up, so we can start on the poster board.

03/18/16:
Today, Mr.Vuillaume told us that he will not be here next week Monday and Tuesday. Our susbistute teacher is a psych teacher, who used to work at Sandburg. It will be easy because she has done psych fair, so she can help us with any problems that we have. We looked at poster boards from past psych fairs, to get an understanding of how our board should/ should not look. Mr. Vuillaume called our group up to go through our experiment, and tell him any problems that we are having. So, now we are currently working on our poster board, we now have an idea of what he wants.

03/21/16:
Today, We are just working on our poster board. We printed bubble letters and then colored them in. We decided to color them pink and blue to represent girl and boy.

03/22/16:
Today, we are still working on our poster board. The substitute teacher was very helpful with giving is tips and telling us about previous psych fair.

03/23/16:

Today, Mr.Vuillaume went over the plan for tonight and tomorrow. Tonight will be a test run, we are using our parents as guinea pigs.
03/24/16:

Today is the day that we have been working towards, The Psych Fair!! I think I am more excited because it is my birthday. So far everything is going okay, we are trying to draw people to our experiment. We have gotten people to come to our experiment now, we noticed that when people see other people or their friends then they want to try it too. People seem to enjoy our experiment and want to come back to prove that they can do better. We noticed that the apples are the hardest for people to get.  I feel like we had a pretty even amount of grade levels test out our experiment, but I think Freshman are the most. We are having pizza right now which is good, for our lunch break. We are trying to get everything together after our pizza break, since now people are arriving. We also took this time to have 2 of us switch out the fruits and change the lemon juice. So many people have been putting their noses, so the fruits have been through a lot, also the apples are turning brown. People have also been learning that coffee acts like a cleanser for the nose, which most did not know before. Now the Psych Fair is over, the clean up was very easy.

  4. This is a very interesting and well planned experiment.I would be very interested to see the results and whether or not women really do have a better sense of smell.

  5. Love the idea of testing the sense of smell between the two genders. Do you expect drastically different results?

  6. This is something I've never thought about before. I don't think there is a difference in how the genders smell things but I'm interested to see the results.

  16. There's nothing more interesting than Battle of the sexes. I wish you luck on your experiment, and i really hope you don't have people smell something nasty.

  19. I like your idea of comparing your results between boys and girls. You guys have clearly done a great job preparing for your experiment. Good luck!

  20. Interested to see if gender actually impacts smell that much. Hoping the women win!

  21. This is a very descriptive experiment, it will be interesting to see if gender does effect the test.

  22. Women probably have a better sense of smell. This has already been researched well, and smell factors into mate selection ( humans are attracted to mates with the opposite MHC) but seeing this experiment will be interesting.
