Group 7 - Light it Up

Got our topic! Tacs, Matches and a candle. Assigned jobs to everyone and started sharing ideas on how we are going to create the experiment. Ready to work :)

Started working on SH 13 and looking up information on our experiment.

Adding a financial incentive decreases the amount of time for a person to figure out the Candle problem.

Starting a hypothesis for experiment.

Functional Fixedness vs Cognitive Skills

Got our procedure ready! We just have to go out and buy the materials needed.

Our project is called Light It Up

Will candy make people perform better or worse? Stay tuned to find out!

Finishing up our plans and getting ready to start our poster.

Here's a link to see other ways to think out side the box.

Finished our poster ad have everything ready to go for today and tomorrow.
The goal was to put the candle on the poster without the waxing touching the poster and to set it up in a way that the wax wouldn't drip onto the table. Here are some pics from today so far only around 8 people have figured it out.

Psych Fair went great! A lot of people came to try our experiment. People were given a box of tacs, candle, and set of matches. What they had to do what put the candle in a position that the wax wouldn't touch the board, and that the wax wouldn't drip onto the table. Functional fixedness played a role. People only tend to see things for one specific use. In our case people only saw a box of tacs as a box to hold the tacs. They didn't think they could dump the tacs out and pin it on the board then put the candle on the box.

  1. I am curious to see whether or not candy will make people perform better or worse. Great idea!

  2. Perform better or worse at what??

  3. Really interesting idea! I'm not sure what the experiment is but it sounds cool! Good luck!

  4. I wonder if the type of candy used would render different results. Personally, I would work a lot harder for Skittles than Hershey's bar.

    1. True but surprisingly we have found that candy hasn't made them perform better or worse

  5. The explanation of your experiment is a little vague and I'm not exactly sure what it entails but maybe I'll stop by to figure it out. Good luck!

    1. Emily... we want to be vague so people won't look up the experiment. It would mess the whole project up.

  6. Love all the pictures! How will the experiment be shown?

    1. They are supposed to set up the candle in way that the wax won't touch the board or drip onto the table. The materials they have are: box of tacs, candle, and matches.

  7. We are also curious to see what will happen. We also wonder what type of candy will make people work harder

    1. We haven't found any difference if they are told thy will be given candy vs when not told

  8. Curious to know exactly what you are testing. I'm not super clear on the details or what the experiment consists of but sounds cool!

  10. How exactly will the experiment be conducted? I'm curious to see if the candy will actually distract others more.

  12. Could you tell us what you are actually doing with your supplies to see if people perform better? I believe that if there is a reward or consequence, people will perform accordingly.

  13. I'm a little confused on how this is exactly going to work, but I"m sure that candy will effect the outcome

We will see if we offer candy before the experiment will affect the amount of time it takes people to figure out the problem.

  15. I like the idea of using an incentive. This sounds cool and I'm excited to try it.

  16. I'm really curious to see if this will work because I feel like eating sugar makes me focus more but maybe it's just a placebo.

  19. If I had to guess, I'm assuming people would try harder if there's a reward.

  20. I wonder if the type of candy has an effect on the test subject's performance too. Hope everything goes well!

  21. I'm glad that you didn't reveal the actual candle problem in the post, it keeps something for us to find out tomorrow at the fair! really interesting!

  22. Interesting I do believe that people do better when providing with sugar. I wonder what the results will be and what are the participants supposed to be doing?
