Group 35 - Battle of the Brains

Day 1 March 8th, 2016:
Today, Julia and I (Natalie) had difficulties trying to figure out which topic we wanted to do. We originally wanted to do a project based on taste, but then had a second opinion and switched to male vs females. We are going to conduct a test on the students that come to visit our table based on their gender. We will pass out a sheet of paper with various images, numbers, or words on them and give the students 15 seconds to study the sheet. After 15 seconds we will test their knowledge to see if they could remember the items they saw. We will later see whether girls or guys have better short term memory. We also figured out who is going to work on which part of the project and tomorrow we will continue planning our display.

Day 2 March 9th, 2016:
Today's class period was spent filling out the student handout 13 and finding 3-5 other experiments that are similar to ours. We must find experiments, describe, and write about them and how they compare to our own. We found a list of experiments online, but we are having trouble because there is not a lot of specific information that we need.

Day 3 March 10th:
Today we handed in student handout 11 and 12, and also completed the first half of the student handout 13. We found 3 other gender experiments that involved information processing, object location, and recognition. Tomorrow we plan on putting this information together in paragraph form to complete the second and final part of student handout 13. We are also going to try and complete handout 14 and 15 so we can turn it in by Monday.

Day 4 March 11th:
Today in class we started the second half of student handout 13 by creating our paragraphs. We took the information from the top half of the handout and included it in our paragraphs. We finished the majority of the paragraphs during class but had to continue it over the weekend.

Day 5 March 14th:
Today we finished and submitted handout 14 and 15. We figured out our variables and hypothesis in our experiment. We also started to brainstorm how our poster will look.

Day 6 March 15th:
Today we made a lot of progress. We completed and submitted handouts 16-20. We are still thinking about our poster design and finding creative ways to attract people to our booth.

Day 7 March 16th:
Today we are planning on who is buying things for poster and supplies. We are going to get a tri-fold presentation board and decorate one half with pink and the other half with blue. Our name is going to be ¨Battle of the Brains" and we will write this in glitter across the top. Underneath we will have the question ¨which gender will have better memory?¨, so that the people who participate know what the experiment is about. We are also planning to light up the outside of the board with white Christmas lights to attract people.

Day 8 March 17th:
Today we brought in our poster board. We also created our picture sheet for the participants to look at. We will make 4 colored copies of this sheet and laminate them.

Day 9 March 18th:
Today, we started brainstorming designs for our poster. We decided to create one half of the poster pink and the other half blue. We started to plan out what materials we should bring in to make the poster look how we imagined.

Day 10 March 21st:
Today we glued our colored paper to the poster board. We had 5 shades of clue and 5 shades of pink so we created a design that has dark pink paper on the bottom and lighter pink paper on the top. We did the same on the other side with the shades of blue. At home, I cut out strips of glittery paper that we will use to boarder our poster and I also printed out the handout sheet with all the pictures on it.

Day 11 March 22nd:
We partially finished our poster in class today, but we ran out of time and I took it home to finish it. I printed out pictures to go along with our gender theme and I also used glitter to make the poster stand out. We typed up our hypothesis and background information in shorter sentences to glue onto the poster.

Day 12 March 23rd:
Today, I was not at school but Julia got our information about the fair tomorrow. After school, we brought our poster to the PAC to present to the parents attending the prom meeting to make sure our experiment went smoothly.

Day 13 March 24th:
Today is psychology fair 2016. Our experiment ran smoothly throughout the whole fair. We were able to attract a lot of people to our table and we were able to get a lot of feedback. We had around the range of people we were expecting to be at our table. After participating in the experiment, we had various types of candy for the participants to take. We will rally up the data over the weekend and see if our hypothesis was correct. The highest amount of words any one was able to remember was 13/45, memorized by a male participant.

Day 14 March 28th:
As our final day, we finished uploading pictures to the last blog day. We also read through the rubric to our final paper we have to write. We looked through our data more in depth and took the average of girls vs guys. There was 129 male participants and 182 females to make for a total of 311 participants. Our average for females was 7.8 words memorized and our average for male participants was 7.4 words memorized. With this information, our hypothesis was correct with females having a better short term memory.

  1. I wonder if the "priming" research might be interesting as you study gender and memory? https://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/unique-everybody-else/201212/think-man-effects-gender-priming-cognition

  2. Your experiment is really shaping up. Have you looked into priming? Might be an interesting twist to your experiment.

  3. I am interested to see the outcome of your experiment and find out if males or females have a better short term memory! I also wonder if the images and numbers you are having the students study will be harder or easier for a specific gender.

  4. it's going to be interesting to see who has the better short term memory!

    1. I agree. I think this will be really interesting to see which sex has the better short term memory. I hope I have time to participate in this experiment.

  5. This is an interesting idea, I wonder what the results will be, and whether or not gender plays a role in short term memory capacity.

  6. This experiment has a lot of potential for interesting results, I'm not sure what to expect. Should be very exciting to find out!

  7. this idea is really cool! it will be interesting to see how gender affects memory

  8. This experiment will be very interesting to see and try out! You guys have really fun ideas to persuade students into wanting to go to your booth with the Christmas lights and everything. I have always wondered which gender has the best short term memory, or if gender has anything to do with short term memory at all.

  9. Looking forward to this one. Battling genders against each other always makes for good competitive spirit.

  10. Will you survey each participant to determine their affinity to this kind of experiment?

  11. I predict that each gender will have the same amount of short term memory. Who knows? We won't until this experiment is completed.

  12. Very interested to see if females or males will ave better short term memory. Good choice with half pink and half blue!

  13. it sounds like a great idea and i would definitely be attracted to the white Christmas lights. I wonder if the gender that wins for short term would be the same as the winner of a long term memory test, or if the opposite gender would win.

  14. This sounds really interesting; I wonder if the different items in the pictures will have an effect on whether boys or girls are able to remember them better.

  15. It is interesting to see how gender affects individuals differently. Definitely a great experiment, it would be awesome to find out which gender has a better short-term memory.

  17. This experiment sounds cool! I would be even more intrigued if in the future more extensive experiments were done on a more varied age range etc.

  18. The experiment sounds interesting, I'm curious as to which gender overall will display better short term memory.

  19. Your experiment truly creates a interest in participation by creating competition among the genders and i'm very curious to see how it turns out!

  20. This experiment is gonna be very interesting. I am not sure which gender will have the better memory but I really want to try and see how my memory is and which gender has the better memory

  21. This is a well thought out experiment and you guys seem really prepared! I can't wait to see just how competitive everyone will get because everyone likes to win.

  22. This sounds like a really good way to compare the memory of each gender! It might be interesting to ask different students if they had a certain approach to remember more images. Good Luck!

  23. I think differentiating each gender in terms of memory is a very cool experiment! I am looking forward to what you find.

  24. I wonder if there is a way to test if the differences are biological or if they are influenced by societal norms.

  25. I like the boys vs girls thing. It definitely will create some interesting results and competition between kids in class.

  27. I think it may be a good idea to take the median value from both genders because the average could be skewed by those who do very well or very poorly.
