Group 29 - The Name Game

Day 1- Today we are trying to brainstorm ideas to use for our first experiment for psych fair. We want to use the idea of stereotypes with the use of names.
Day 2- The experiment we are going to be doing is one where we take 3 pictures of the same baby at the age of 10-18 months old and name one a boy's name, one a girl's name, and one simply baby. We are going to make a list of traits that would commonly go along with a boy baby's personality, a girl baby's personality, and just all baby's personalities in general and see how the name/gender of the baby affects a persons idea about that baby.
Day 3-  probably going to use this picture for the baby???
Day 4- We have all of our materials for the psych fair ready to go!
Day 5- Continuing working on our posters!
Day 6- Psych fair was a great experience and we are glad we proved our hypothesis!

  4. I'm interested to see if students match up the traits with the gender they are stereotyped with. I wonder if male or female students will tend to stereotype the picture of the baby more, or if that even makes a difference in your results.

  5. A stereotype study sound really cool. Even if it's all the same baby, I think peoples judgement will take over.

  6. This sounds like a great idea. I can't wait to see how it goes.

  7. How will you decide on which personality traits to choose considering the close similarity of how children act at such a young age? Will there be enough, or too much of a difference?

  8. I really like that you're going for an experiment where you test stereotypes.I'm looking forward to this during the psych fair.

  9. I think that's a great picture for the baby because you obviously can't tell the sex of the child which, in my opinion, will make the experiment much more objective. I can't wait to see the results of this one!

  10. This experiment sounds really interesting, I doubt I'd be able to distinguish the difference because of the personalities given. I'm curious to see how this turns out.

  11. This is something that I have never thought about before, so I can't wait to try it out and see the results!

  12. Cute experiment. I hope it ends well :)

  13. I am excited to see the results, I also like that you used such an earlier-in-life photo, so as not to ruin the experiment by exposing the gender of this baby.

  14. It seems interesting to see how people attribute their various biases, can't wait to try it out.

  15. cool concept, interested in seeing how this goes

  16. Such a cute baby picture! Interested for the results and if people's ideas will change based on the name, gender, and personality traits.

  17. This sounds really interesting. I'm really excited to try this out because I have never seen an experiment like this one before. I'm just curious as to why you guys are doing this one? Who came up with the idea? I wonder if genders will stereotype their own baby gender or the opposite of that. I feel like I would end up stereotyping my own baby gender or even a baby in general because we tend to just generalize traits and don't think of everyone as unique in their own ways.

  18. This helps see the bias we have innately, probably mostly between boy and girl names.

  19. I like this idea because I have a sister who has a common Irish boy's name and most people hear her name and think she is a boy. Most people hear a name and automatically judge someone on what his or her personality is like, even if he or she is nothing like this stereotype. This study is a fantastic way of seeing just how much people stereotype others without knowing anything about them.

  20. This experiment is something I had never considered before. I think giving the baby a boy or a girl name will definitely affect how people perceive the baby's personality traits.

  21. cool concept, check out freakonomics, the book goes into a study about naming babies there and how it stereotypes children

  22. From what you have researched, do you think there will only be positive impacts on the baby, or could you see there being negative impacts as well?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Sounds interesting & very different from the other psych experiments. I'm curious to see how it turns out, good luck!

  24. I'm very intrigued with your experiment! It'll be very interesting to see how people could so easily stereotype anyone, even infants without knowing every thing about them.

    ReplyDelete
  25. It is interesting to see if the stereotypes change based on one's name and gender.

  26. This experiment sounds very interesting.I'm looking forward to seeing how people judge the baby based on the information given.

  27. This is going to be a very interesting experiment to see what stereotypes associate with which gender and/or name. I'm very curious myself as to what the results will be.

  28. I actually heard about an survey about how people use the names of baby to determine how smart and successful they will be. It was pretty crazy judging an infant that cant even talk just based upon their name. Im glad I came across your experiment so I can get more insight on this sterotype!! Also I approve of the baby picture, its cute!!

  29. Interesting idea! I wonder what people will think if you choose a name that could easily be a girl or boy name.

  30. The baby is really cute! I'm glad this experiment addresses the issue of stereotyping. There are so many stereotypes in the world, but this is definitely an interesting one.

    ReplyDelete
  31. That's a good picture because I can't even tell if that's a male or female baby!! I'm probably going to name my baby a gender-neutral name because I love gender-neutral names!! And maybe you can follow up on your experiment by giving people a name and a list of different faces and telling the people to assign the name to a face. That would be cool!

  32. Looking forward to this experiment. I know stereotypes are huge in the world. Lots of people classify individuals based on names and race.

    ReplyDelete
  33. Curious to see the results, I think gender will play a role in the characteristics given.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I like this idea. I think that many people wouldn't see that it is the same baby in all of the pictures.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I've never heard of an experiment like this one before. I like how you guys are doing an experiment that reflects how people think of babies and how some people think that their name and gender can have an impact on their traits.

    ReplyDelete
  36. This is a very interesting experiment. I like how you are focusing on stereotypes because unfortunately we do have to deal with that a lot in this world. I also like how you are showcasing that stereotypes even occur in babies and their names. This is a very unique take on stereotypes.

    ReplyDelete
  37. This seems very interesting! I'm definitely going to try this booth and am interested in the stereotypical responses people are going to say about the boy or girl names they produce.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I think it would be cool if you got got three pictures of babies of different races and ask people guess each babies name three times. After a couple of people give their guesses you can see if the are any correlations between the guesses of all the subjects.

  39. I like the baby picture because its a super cute baby. I think this experiment is interesting because a lot of people comment on the name of someone else with "You don't look like a _____" so this should be interesting

    ReplyDelete
  40. I can't wait to see how this experiment turns out! It seems very interesting!

    ReplyDelete
  41. I am excited to see how stereotypes affect the perception of the baby. Interesting considering our current world

    ReplyDelete
  42. It's weird because people are always so quick to label babies. Expose those gender stereotypes!!

    ReplyDelete
  43. I think the results of this are going to be interesting because stereotypes are a huge part of our society

    ReplyDelete
  44. With the outlasting stereotypes and classifications in our society this experiment will be very interesting!

    ReplyDelete
  45. This sounds like an interesting experiment but I feel as if most people would describe a baby the same whether it is a boy or a girl. If it was done with different races and different appearances, it would be more interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  46. People definitely associate names with traits of certain people they already know to have that name. For example, if your best friend had the name Jenni and you hear of another person with that name, you automatically would think of your best friend and the qualities she has even though you do not know the new person with the same name.

    ReplyDelete
  47. This is an interesting experiment! I would have never thought to associate stereotypes with a baby! Good luck.

    ReplyDelete
  48. This is a great idea! I would like to see how gender plays a role on babies' personalities.

    ReplyDelete
  49. Wow! I was not expecting this by simply reading the title. Sounds very interesting:) Good luck

    ReplyDelete
  50. I think people associate names with people they have already met and how they feel about them. I think there will be many different results!

    ReplyDelete
  51. Sounds like a fun experiment. Cant wait to see it

    ReplyDelete
  52. The picture is adorable! It's also really interesting to see what people associate with typical genders even without knowing anything about the baby.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I'm very interested in the end results of this experiment and how the replies may vary.

    ReplyDelete
  54. This is an awesome idea. I haven't ever thought about babies of different genders having different personalities. Can't wait to see it tomorrow!

  55. Gender and names are such an intriguing topic... especially in today's society. I am looking forward to seeing the end results. Stereotypes can be a touchy subject, but a great idea for an experiment.

    ReplyDelete
  56. I really like this idea because sometimes people base names of others to their background and culture. Someone telling a black honors student that he doesn't look like a Tyrone is insulting. So, it will be interesting to see how this experiment plays out.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I think names can predict what a person is like based on past judgement, but sometimes people's opinions override the persons actual personality

    ReplyDelete
  58. I don't think a name predicts what the person is like based on a name. The origin of the name is not at all what the person might be. It is a suggestion, A name is something you cant judge , you need to know the person under the name. What they stand for , their morals , their attitudes towards different things and overall well being there name just makes them unique
