Today we were assigned the bitter tea experiment. The tea is a special tea usually used by diabetics to control hunger. The tea is not sold in stores so obtaining it is going to be a little hard but our teacher told us that he has them and that a bag cost about $1.16. the whole point of the demonstration is to show how our taste buds can be dulled by chemicals in the tea, the tea will completely turn off the ability to taste sweetness.
so lets hope this surprises people.
We just got done picking the jobs for each member and are starting on the hand out 11 and 12
Handout 11 and Handout 12
Starting off good!! kinda a surprised that we picked up three more members but we are making it work and are ready to make the best out of it !
Day 2: Starting to look up some information on past experiments and demonstrations
Today we were assigned to gather some information on previous experiments done that relate to ours. We started to figure out how to correctly do the APA style citing. It seemed like a lot of other people have tried this experiment to help them lose weight or control their hunger for sugar as diabetics. Some of the articles we found were
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3592606/
http://www.pharmatutor.org/articles/antidibetic-evaluation-of-gymnema-sylvestre-extracts-experimental-animals
and we are still working on getting more to build more information and backing into our project,
Kinda struggling on what is good to use and what is not so good. also finding experiments used on people are very rare to find , so that setting us back just a little but we will over come it quick. Other then that todays seems to be a productive day for the short time we had to work on it
Day3: Today was a finish up day , we touched up on or background information, we finally finished it and are now moving on to the next work sheet ahead of schedule, so today is going to be a little bit of a slower day where we will look over all the information we gathered and turn it all in.
Worksheet 13: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1QwvIza6M4XXpKcBg6eFubhanQqeskCSmInAiFo4h7to/edit
Since we have two members missing and are ahead a little we will take this day to kinda take it slower, but we have gone over the last two sheets left to turn in on Monday. Hopefully this will all go smooth. We are kinda confused on the variables and how to create our hypothesis but we will all sit down when we are all here hopefully tomorrow
Day 4: today we are going to finish hand outs 14 and 15

our thesis is coming together
Thesis: By drinking gymnema tea it will alter the taste of chocolate after drinking the tea because of the change in gustatory cells.
We have also broken up the work equally with the most people on the hardest ones and one person on the easy work sheet. and hope to finish it today to have monday to kick start the next two sheets
Day 5: today we are starting to secure exactly how we are going to carry out our demonstration and attract people to come and experience our demonstration. we have a good idea on how we are going to carry out the demonstration and what are focus is going to be. But knowing the conditions and location of the fair we will defiantly have to adjust to what happens.
So far so good though, we decided how we are going to gather the resources and get them all together at the fair. Jobs and goals have been assigned and i think we have a clear path set, lets hope it doesn't all go to hell in a hand-basket when the fair starts
Day 6: we started our rough draft and centered down on our materials needed, its kinda slowed down at the moment, mostly because we are working out who does what and when, hopefully we figure it all out.
Here is our materials list :
https://docs.google.com/document/d/1DDZWpAN1UE15YYhCFASUv_3PjgUNiXY3MoKlpJrxce4/edit?ts=56e84716
But just like all of the the other 5 days we have set our goals out and have been sticking to them, hopefully it all pays out. Kinda a boring day to be honest because its kinda the nitty gritty work now, working on a rough draft and all. But Psych fair is only a week and two days away!!
On to the next day.
Day 7 : Nothing much to report on today, just working on our rough draft more and collecting materials. All seems to be good no sweats or tears yet. But the day is still young and the fair is only days away.
Day 8: everything is all coming together we have all of our resources, just waiting to do our poster and kinda get the hang of it. Some of us are nervous, especially me. but we finished all of the handouts and are turning it all in. Now all that is let is to split up and assign what we are all going to do the day of the fair. Kinda hope all the tea docent make a mess in my trunk, mostly because its a new car and second because there goes our project
Day 9: Not a very strong day, we are missing one member , and he was assigned to bring in the poster board. So thats a downer for us, but we have the whole weekend along with Monday and Tuesday to work on it. But other then that we have all of our material and a good idea on how to carry out our experiment. We created the questioner that we are going to have the people we test on fill out after we are finished.
Questioner:

Day 10: The fair is only two days away. We are going strong all of our materials are done and our poster is started. nothing really much holding us back besides trying to condense information and making sure all of our pictures match up. But we have today and tomorrow to figure out, so we should be good. Time is a ticking
Day 11: the last day before the psych fair. all things are ready to go for parents night tonight. hopefully any errors we can fix if they come up. our group members will be short one the day of the fair but we can make it work. hopefully the forms will work and nothing fails or breaks. The last worry is that we will end up out of tea close to the end of the day but we will have to limit how much we give out and to make sure we dont give the stuff to the same people
day 12: day of the Psych fair all went good, thank good

Day 13: the psych fair is over, we had a few days to calm down and look over our information and statistics. Its looking good so far, our hypothesis was close. WE did have a few hiccups because of people not fully tasting in general or being super tasters so that threw off the amount of people who's taste was affected. But we should be able to draw the same conclusion. But on all the experiments went great.
this sounds really cool! you all have a lot of detailed interesting information on your blog
ReplyDeleteI look forward to seeing your experiment and it seems very interesting.
ReplyDeleteAre some people immune to the effects of the tea? What's the variable in this experiment?
ReplyDeleteThis blog is really informative! I can tell you guys really worked hard on your experiment. I've always wanted to try that tea so I will be stopping by!
ReplyDeleteI've tried the tea but reading the blog really did help give me some more info. Great work and good luck!
DeleteI like all the detail you have provided. I tried this tea last semester in psych. Good luck.
ReplyDeleteI remember trying this tea in psych 1 last year, it was interesting to see how some people were affected by it and some weren't
ReplyDeleteIf the participant is eating chocolate before will they not know that the taste will be altered?
ReplyDeleteGreat to see all this detail going into an interesting experiment, can't wait to try it out.
ReplyDeleteI drink tea often, so excited to taste this even though it blocks out the taste of sweetness and learn how it can help to control weight.
ReplyDeleteSuper excited to see your experiment at the fair tomorrow!
ReplyDeleteExcited to try your experiment, i want to see how it effects my taste buds and hunger
ReplyDeleteI'm a little confused about what this experiment is testing but other than that it sounds well planned and very interesting.
ReplyDeleteI've noticed before that eating certain foods will make others taste different -- this sounds super cool!
ReplyDeleteSuper interesting experiment, excited to try it. I've noticed taste changes with other foods like this so I'm curious to see the effects of this tea.
ReplyDeleteI'm interested in finding out how the tea will affect taste. Cool topic!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to try the tea. I wonder how bitter the tea will be.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a cool concept how certain foods have the ability to alter the taste of others-I can't wait to see the results!
ReplyDeleteThis seems so cool! I cant wait to see if the tea will actually "turn off" my taste buds because I know I have eaten foods in the past that do affect how I taste other things. I'm definitely going to try this test!
ReplyDeleteYou're blog is very detailed, so it made it easy to understand what the experiment is. This sounds really interesting and I'm curious to see how it turns out. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteThis really seems interesting. I hope to be able to try this experiment. I have never heard of this type of tea that does this. Hopefully your experiment works out well.
ReplyDeleteI've tried the tea they were talking about and i actually found it good. So il for sure go to this experiment.
ReplyDeleteI did too and I enjoyed it as well! I will stop by!
DeleteI am excited to see how this experiment will affect some people but not others. It sounds very interesting.
ReplyDeleteIf the tea is meant to dull taste buds, then won't the results of the experiment be the same? That everyone will think things taste differently?
ReplyDeleteI'm interested to see the effects of the tea! I see diabetics use it, which interests me because I've never heard of it and I have T1D! Maybe it can end up helping me out.
ReplyDeleteI never knew that this sort of thing was used by diabetics to control sweet cravings, that's so interesting! I wonder how the makeup of the tea goes into numbing the cells, like it is a specific chemical in the tea that could be utilized in pill form? Or is it the combination of all the ingredients?
ReplyDeleteVery interesting of how the tea could be able to shut off our taste buds
ReplyDeleteI tried this experiment in psych last semester. Its interesting to see peoples responses.
ReplyDeleteWhy exactly does the tea dull taste perceptions?
